 but the carb overflowing soon put paid to that...

cleaned it and now the accelerator pump worked

isn't she lovely...

and stunned me by starting and running for six or seven seconds

before the belching flame vid...

and this is why?... 

after a few suggestions from mr rowan,
I thought I'd check the pushrod adjustment and timing...
pratt here had used the top dead centre mark instead the advanced timing marks for adjusting the rods, so I guess the valves were staying open or letting in to much fuel or something like...
