the carb, cleaned with airline meticulously and try to start, no gas - accelerator pump not working, clean again and it overflows, check float and seat, clean again and overflows... give up

...and I realise the cable bracket I bent to fit around the oil line means the cable rubs and will snap along the road - if it ever runs...

...so looking at getting a something else

oil from crancase breather  - pressure or blockage?

took off the cooler and got oil to the filter by kicking 

the thermostat wouldn't come out so I used an airline

bang! found some parts in the outside workshop (garden)
hmmm, so thats fucked that

this S&S filter seems to stop the oil getting to the tank

I checked here http://www.sscycle.com/techtips/
and these are the 30 micron filters (84-99) the one you don't want are for the twin cams
there aren't any other alternatives (OEM 63810-80) except in size so...

after a few suggestions from mr rowan,
I thought I'd check the pushrod adjustment and timing...
pratt here had used the top dead centre mark instead the advanced timing marks for adjusting the rods, so I guess the valves were staying open or letting in to much fuel or something like...

essential fluids...

 Had to cut these off the tranny studs (sorry gearbox! chaps) 

of course the whole studs came out too! Hmmm.

Because one couldn't get any oil in the box because some pratt put the nuts back on over the now redundant longer studs for the starter bracket. 

Now put back shortened with nice stainless dome heads.

 Still no sign of oil out of pipe, after kicking the engine over for quite a while

but at least two leaks so it is going round somewhere

 a temporary solution for those damn lights

nice small mechanical speedo arrived saturday
